"Update on the Garden Harvest"

Feb 12, 2024 - 12:54pmSummary: The potatoes in the garden are growing nicely despite being very young. Kale has been partly consumed, with enough remaining for occasional meals, while Bok choy needs to be eaten soon. Romaine lettuce is prospering and there is still plenty left despite consumption last week, and the broccolini is flowering and should be used soon, possibly in a stir fry. Unfortunately, the Brussel sprouts plant will not yield produce and the spinach seeds have not shown any growth yet.

garden update 2/12/2024

No voice note this time, since I went out to record one and the voice notes app only recorded half :(

The potatoes continue to grow nicely. Still very very young, but look good. Kale was used up a fair bit, but enough to eat some here and there. Bok choy definitely needs to be eaten soon. Romaine is doing fairly well, we did eat a lot of it last week, but lots of growth still. The broccolini is flowering often, probably need to use it this week. Maybe stir fry? Brussel sprouts leaves should be used. The plant itself isn’t going to produce :( Spinach remains a bummer. None of the seeds have shown any growth yet.

The broccolini is nearby, showing signs of flowering attempts. Moving upwards, kale plants are visible with their characteristic leaves, looking robust. Beside the kale, there's bok choy that appears ready to bolt. Towards the right, romaine lettuce with its crisp, vertical leaves and rainbow mizuna with distinct colorful leaves are both flourishing. In contrast, the Brussels sprouts plant seems to be underperforming and doesn't match the vitality of its garden companions. The garden is mulched with straw, and a drip irrigation system is installed for watering.

Notable is the dominance of leafy greens, some of which show signs of bolting, characterized by elongated stems and flowering heads, particularly evident in the Amara greens and bok choy. The bok choy appears to be withering or near the end of its life cycle. Amongst the assortment, other plants remain robust and healthy. The bed itself is bordered by light-colored wood, with an adjacent drip irrigation system visible. The ground beneath the bed is comprised of a brick-like surface.
