"Challenging Yet Rewarding: A Day at Sunset Cliffs"

Dec 13, 2024 - 6:59amSummary: The surf at Sunset Cliffs was unusually erratic today, possibly due to a mix of swells or low tide, though bigger waves and good size were still present. The break was primarily lefts, with the usual solid right closing out. Despite long waits between sets and a challenging surf, the session was still enjoyable and worth the effort.

Transcript: Dog, this is Surf Report. I don't know if you surf today or if you're going to surf today, but I'll tell you what, at Sunset Cliffs, pretty fucking wonky. I don't know if it was the mixture of swell. People out there are saying it was the low tide, but quite frankly, like, dude, I've been there at that same tide and it was not that wonky. So I don't know if it's just the mix of swell, but, you know, there's still waves to be had. I will say that. Like, it was good size, some, like, pretty big bombs that came through, long waits in between sets for Sunset Cliffs. But, hey, you know, surf to surf, I was out there, like, two hours. So it couldn't have been that bad, you know. So I'd say worth it to get in the water, but expect to be battling a little bit with the waves. Like, the break was totally different than it normally was. Normally there's this, like, really solid right. And today it was just, like, almost purely a left for the first hour I was in. Like, only a left and the right was just a closeout. So it was, like, pretty interesting to see the reef behave in that way. But yeah dude, surfing some good shit.

Today I decided to surf at Sunset Cliffs, initially underwhelmed by the apparent poor surf conditions. However, once out in the water, the waves proved to be unexpectedly steep and challenging, making for an exciting session. I met a few surfers, including someone named Brian, all of us on shorter boards, catching waves and occasionally wiping out. Despite the struggles with some powerful sets and an intense paddling experience, I managed to catch a particularly large, thrilling wave, turning the session into a memorable one despite the ocean's humbling force.

I just had an amazing surf session at Sunset Cliffs with really solid-sized waves ranging from four to eight feet. The conditions were pretty good, though the sets were inconsistent. When they did come, the waves were great. I spent an enjoyable hour and a half on my longboard and I'm glad I pushed myself to get out of bed and make it to the beach. Totally worth it and I'm feeling stoked. Planning to relax tomorrow, not sure about Friday, but Saturday is definitely going to be epic. I'm pumped for it.

I started surfing at North Garbage but quickly moved to South Garbage due to the better waves and less crowded conditions. While paddling out, I had a close call with another surfer who yelled at me; I apologized, but he continued to be aggressive, suggesting I should leave the water. Despite the unpleasant encounter, I caught around 50 waves, including some impressive ones that others weren't attempting. Overall, it was a solid surfing day with good conditions and a chance to get used to my new board.

I just finished surfing at Sunset Cliffs today. It was an average day with pretty slow surf. I'm planning to surf with Chandler tomorrow, but the waves are expected to be even smaller, so I'm anticipating it might not be the best day for surfing. Despite the possibility of challenging conditions, I'm still looking forward to being in the ocean. It's always a positive experience, very calm and mellow. Overall, I can't complain too much; it's nice to just be out there.

"A Day of Waves, Community, and Reflection"

I had an incredible day surfing and engaging in community activities. Started off with a surf session at North Garbage, where I initially enjoyed the solitude until it got crowded. Managed to ride one of the wildest waves of my life, a complex maneuver that felt truly rewarding. Then, after an ambitious attempt at a 10-foot wave that ended in a spectacular wipeout, I decided to switch spots, moving to South Garbage as the crowd thickened and the waves grew more challenging. Realizing my energy was waning, I wrapped up the session and did a bit of environmental cleanup, picking up trash along the way out. After surfing, I caught up with Brian at Sunset Cliffs, learning he's now pursuing art full-time, which was inspiring. Our brief conversation was a pleasant catch-up on life and his new ventures into resin art. Earlier in the day, I volunteered at a CAF (Challenged Athletes Foundation) event, assisting with Mark's Wall and learning a lot about the complexities of setting up climbing systems for adaptive climbers. The event was overwhelming but rewarding, especially seeing climbers like one remarkable participant who successfully climbed despite significant limb differences. This experience and my time surfing underscored a day of physical exertion, learning, and meaningful social interactions, closing with the anticipation of enjoying an açaí bowl, a perfect end to a fulfilling day. I spent a long day working and finishing up some tasks for Josie before deciding it's time to take a break. It's 4 p.m., and I'm heading home with plans to grab an acai bowl and possibly prepare some burrito ingredients. I've been thinking about taking a break from computer-related work tomorrow and instead focusing on some personal tasks and home activities. I also plan to vote and maybe tackle those little things I've been putting off. Living near Sunset Cliffs is a highlight for me, especially with its proximity to my favorite bagel joint and other local spots like Obeys People's Market. I love the vibe of the area, and it's a great place for surfing. Now, I'm looking forward to enjoying my acai bowl and winding down for the day. And oh, I've got to get back to Josie. That's pretty much it for today.
