"Exploring the Potential of Language Models and Self-Expression"

Feb 1, 2024 - 9:47pmSummary: I had a profound two-hour call with Jordan at 9 a.m., discussing a range of topics including the exciting potential of language models, which he called "word calculators." Jordan and I agreed on the importance of solidifying a good intention to create a compelling demo that deeply explores the vision of our project. We also touched on self-expression and the value of using the platform as a "playground" to honestly express oneself without worrying about the audience. Lastly, we delved into the dynamic nature of intentions and how they evolve over time, along with the idea that AI could support individuals by acting as an executive function override during moments of weakness.

Transcript: And the other thing that I want to do right now is discuss or talk about the call that I had with Jordan earlier. And it was a really fantastic call. We must have talked right around 9 a.m. and probably for almost two hours. And I'm just going to quickly review my notes. And well, he called LLMs word calculators, which I think is amazing. And he just said a bunch of things that kind of like, I don't know, really, really hit me. And one of the aspects of on the outcome side is maybe wanting to get some like really solid, like one good intention that I have really fleshed out and see if that's like maybe a compelling demo or even just like walking through the story and being able to talk about it with someone and be like, this is an example of one thing that it can do and go deep in the vision of it and see what that feels like. So, yeah, I'm curious about that. Is working through different stories and that all of those stories should be covered. So that's something I'm curious about. One of the other things was talking about just generally like the kind of expression on it. And I don't know, like for me, it's like being able to express something like very raw of myself, like me talking to this thing is like, dude, this is how I speak. I actually might want to change how I speak, you know, but regardless, this is what it means to be me. And that's what I like about it personally, is like it just gives me the ability to like throw something on the internet. And I don't need to think about audience or care. I'm building a playground for real self-expression. For me, this is a place for real self-expression. And I want that to be the case for everyone. I want it to be in the tone of them. I want it to feel like you. That's totally it. And Jordan was really good about pointing that out for himself too. And I'm so glad because he just gets it, which is really, really cool. And then there was the kind of like three big things that I think we said in concert with each other. And one was that from my side is intention is a proxy for meaning. From his side is like, well, he gave this metaphor of in some ways, like you have the logical self now that wants to like form a new habit or break out of a habit. But when that habit comes, it is so much harder to break out of it. And that is the moment that you want this like AI to help you. And I think that's brilliant. And it's, he said execution function, but I, or executive function, executive function override or something like that. Teleport the intentions like when I'm weak effectively, like making the whole thing easier. Anyway, he did a much better job explaining that. And then the other thing that he said is intentions are living. And that is so remarkably true. Intentions are living because once you get somewhere with the intention, the intention will change. Like my intention for meditation, that's probably only going to grow in my life. Ideally. And same thing with food. If I cook 80% of my meals, well, then it's going to be like, okay, well, now I want to host people and cook dinner for them and do that on a regular basis. So it's working towards that in some way. And I just think his pointing out of that was absolutely brilliant.

I had a beneficial conversation with John, who helped me work through my thoughts and appreciated his support in allowing me to talk things out. We discussed building a simple intention website that John sketched, considering the addition of GPS functionality due to its importance for intention-based actions, and the possibility of an AI assisting with small tasks based on one's intentions. Despite my aversion to login pages, John made me realize it's acceptable to ask for passwords on a website, and that a solution to eliminate logins can be addressed later. This talk has energized me for the week, and I'm excited about working on this intention website project, hopeful about committing to it longer term, and grateful for the sense of direction it provides.

I had a productive call with Jamie, during which we discussed my ideas and strategies for effectively pitching them. Jamie gave me tips on improving user experience and the importance of showing a polished concept over a rudimentary but functional prototype. We touched on the balance between immediate buildable aspects and long-term vision, emphasizing the importance of clarity in communicating how short-term plans align with the long-term future. I am grateful for Jamie's encouragement and advice, and I'm looking forward to possibly working with friends like Austin to further explore and demonstrate the potential of my ideas.
