"Ascending Skills: A Journey Through Flight Training and Navigation Mastery"

Mar 15, 2025 - 9:41pmSummary: The text discusses a flight training experience, focusing on using an MCP client, a tool for handling files, and training with an instructor named Demi. The writer is learning to manage power and pitch more effectively, especially when flaps are down, and is getting better at aligning with the glide slope. They note the importance of keeping a hand on the throttle and using carb heat appropriately. The writer also plans to surf in the morning and review briefings and checklists for the next flight. The speaker appreciates the reduced workload from consistent focus and expresses interest in flying better planes, specifically noting that 20543 is significantly better than Quebec Alpha. They mention considering demi-suction mounting with the pivot case, despite the cost, and recognize the need to learn more about ForeFlight, particularly for VFR navigation and basic features. The speaker also wants to review checklists, engine shutdown procedures, and idle procedures, and emphasizes the importance of being briefed properly on the extinguisher and taking over emergency procedures. Lastly, they plan to review their logbook and do some calculations.

Transcript: Just briefly talking. Well, one thing is like MCP server that, or rather a client that accepts, basically it's just a collection of tools, right? At the end of the day. So something that receives files and knows what to do with them. Curious what that might look like, but yeah, just basically a burrito on another form. Potentially a much simplified form where I don't have to do as much management and curation of it. But I don't know yet. I did a lot of landing stay with Demi. Getting there. Speed and approach was much more comfortable today. It didn't feel like total chaos every time. Like I felt like I had kind of a grip on what was going on and knowing what I need to do with power and pitch a little bit more. So that was pretty helpful, especially like power when flaps are down. You could tell like your pitch actually might be good already. But because you need to increase the power, you have to push down on the elevator. And that actually is the thing that ultimately brings your airspeed up. So. Yeah. And then being below the glide slope. Demi just saying like, oh, just fly until you hit the glide slope. Basically fly straight until you hit the glide slope. And it's like, oh, yeah, duh. That makes sense. And similar when above the glide slope is like just means you need to descend faster. And I guess that means fucking nose down, you know, and pulling the power out so you don't gain too much speed. And like, you know, somehow like that's like not very complicated, but it's just a lot when you're in the moment, especially the first couple times. But now now it like just makes sense. One thing just overall, I guess, is like keeping the hand on throttle like a lot of the time. That clearly seems to be a thing. Yeah. I mean, another thing today is like not really playing around with carb heat, but like really carb heat should be coming on, I believe. But. Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, overall, pretty solid. Yeah. Tomorrow is going to be an interesting good day, I think. I want to go surf in the morning, so I'm going to go surf in the morning. I don't have like a particular time to get up and do that. Probably like 630 or 7. Doesn't need to be crazy. I definitely need to go through briefings tomorrow so I can do that in the plane. As well as reviewing the checklist generally to see like what makes sense. Like I feel like my pre-flight checklist was pretty fine overall. The. There's like a few things on the engine start checklist and whatever that like I probably need to pay more attention to. Stuff like idle was totally missing for sure. I wonder if there was anything else that was missed. I'll try to have to go through it tomorrow and see. But. But. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I did enjoy flying with the G5s. Honestly like not that much different than the six pack at the end of the day. But. It's just a more information dense. System. So. Being able to see. You know. Airspeed there. As well as. Altitude like on the. the same point of focus is really nice. Definitely reduces workload a little bit. So, yeah, I mean, I'm interested in learning. I mean, I'm just interested in flying those planes more, though not shit planes. Like, my God, 20543 was significantly better than Quebec Alpha. So, fucking Jesus Christ, this plane, like, actually is a decent plane. Doesn't feel anywhere near as sketchy. I didn't notice my need for paper as much today, and demi-suction mounting with the pivot case. Yeah, I mean, that might be the way. That might be the way. It's a bit expensive, but... If this is something we're going to do, it's probably good to do that. So... Yeah, I'm curious. Obviously, for, like, touch-and-goes and stuff, it's, like, not that big of a deal. Honestly, I need to go through, like, a ForeFlight class, too. So, I'm just going to write a few of these things down. ForeFlight... Specifically for, like, VFR. I've already picked up a bunch, but... Just, like, basic features, probably, I need to pay attention to. I mean, there's also the, like, ADS-B stuff. ADS-B in particular. Like, the Stratus thing. Potentially building my own, but... Whatever. Um... We need to do... We need to review... Checklists. We also definitely need engine... Shutdown... Procedure. Um... And... What was the other thing? Idle. Idle. Um... Okay. Next time... I need to be briefed on the extinguisher... Properly. Um... I need to take over... Emergency stuff. Okay. Um... Yeah, that's going to be that. I'm going to take a look... Take a look... At my logbook... and do some math.

In today’s flight training session, the focus was on landings, with a total of seven at a single airport, Ramona, instead of the initially planned two different locations. The decision to stick to one airport was driven by the complexity of landing and managing communication with the tower. Cloud cover at around 3,600 feet required flying lower than usual, about 3,000 feet, and adjusting the flight path to the northeast to avoid mountains. During communication with Ramona Tower, the pilot made several mistakes, which Chris, likely the instructor, had to correct. On the ground, the pilot struggled with the instructions "line up and wait" and "hold short." The takeoff from Montgomery Field was challenging due to crosswinds, with the pilot dipping the left wing too much and possibly rotating too early. Despite these issues, the pilot managed to get the plane airborne. Chris also assisted by clarifying the "hold short" instruction and landing the plane at Ramona. The pilot acknowledges these errors were likely due to the high cognitive load of handling multiple new tasks simultaneously. During a recent flight session, the pilot focused on improving their landing skills through multiple touch-and-go landings and a final landing at Montgomery. They noted difficulties with descending, maintaining the correct glide slope, and airspeed, often dropping below the 65-knot landing speed. Despite these challenges, they managed one particularly good landing, which gave them hope and motivation. The pilot is planning more pattern work and possibly some instrument training in their next session on Monday. They also aim to refine and laminate their checklists, especially for emergency procedures and landings, and are considering a new flight board or making one themselves. Communication with air traffic controllers remains a challenge at times, and they acknowledge the need to improve in this area as well.
