"Contemplating the Local Costs of Technology Deployment"

Dec 17, 2023 - 10:13pmSummary: The individual is contemplating the potential local costs associated with using technology, such as Whisper, which may not be fully captured by the initial price. The economies of scale are considered, highlighting the complexity of determining the overall impact. There is uncertainty regarding the ultimate deployment of such technology, particularly in relation to large language models. The individual expresses a desire to further engage with the technological community and contribute to solving challenges faced as a developer.

Transcript: One thing I am wondering about is what happens when you bring costs back locally, in the sense that earlier I was talking about Whisper costing $5, but what is the overall cost that it is costing me and reoccurring through my electricity to be able to run Whisper as well. And my bet is that the economies of scale went out here. Yet, the thing with this is somehow we still have cell phones. So, where is this technology ultimately going to be deployed? Yeah, I don't know. I guess it's still something that needs to be figured out and the sensitivity to local large language models is definitely there. Whether it's warranted or not is a different question, but it is very fascinating and I definitely want to participate in that community a bit more and see how I can push it forward via the things that I'm running into, the things that are frustrating for me as a developer, and being able to solve some of them and give back to the community in some way or another.
